Grok AI chatbot is sizzling on the internet—is it better than ChatGPT?
After months of being in early beta, Elon Musk’s Grok AI chatbot is now available for all paid X Premium users. Launched in November 2023 by Musk’s xAI, Grok personifies Musk’s vision of an AI companion that combines intellect with a dash of humor.
Musk himself has touted Grok’s unique personality traits on social media, including its knack for humor and a touch of rebellion—so bold that it jokingly offers recipes for homemade concoctions or responds in playful banter when asked about the best time for Christmas music.
The name “Grok” is borrowed from the Martian language in Robert A. Heinlein’s 1961 sci-fi novel, Stranger in a Strange Land, symbolizing a deep, intuitive understanding. This sets the stage for Grok’s mission: to offer responses that go beyond surface-level interactions, aiming for a connection that’s both insightful and playfully challenging.

Grok’s unique approach to AI chatbots
Like any other AI chatbot, Grok gives users AI-powered responses to given prompts. Yet, unlike most of them, Grok is bold enough to navigate discussions on typically taboo subjects, including divisive political theories and conspiracies. Another standout feature is Grok’s access to real-time data from X, a capability unique to Grok due to X’s selective data-sharing policies. However, Grok can only process texts but not images, audio or videos at the moment.
Drawing inspiration from the comedic sci-fi novel The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Grok mirrors a slice of Musk’s own sarcastic humor, providing answers that one might expect from Musk himself. The goal behind Grok, as stated by xAI, is to democratize access to a powerful research assistant that delivers not just relevant information but also sparks new ideas through its creative data interpretation.
Behind Grok’s brain: Technological advancements and open-source milestones
From a technical standpoint, the backbone of Grok AI—Grok-0—was initially trained with 33 billion parameters. Its evolution, Grok-1, expanded significantly to 314 billion parameters, showcasing enhanced reasoning and coding prowess that outperform ChatGPT 3.5 (the free version of ChatGPT).
In a move towards transparency and collaboration, Grok-1 was made open-source under the Apache-2.0 license on March 17, allowing anyone to use, modify and distribute Grok’s core technology. This move aligns with Musk’s recent legal actions against OpenAI, where he accuses the ChatGPT maker of straying from its original developing open-source AI that would benefit humanity rather than for profit. Musk was an early investor in OpenAI before leaving its board in 2018.
On March 28, xAI introduced the latest model, Grok-1.5, featuring augmented reasoning skills and an expanded context length capable of processing and remembering up to 128,000 tokens of text—equivalent to roughly 300 pages of English text. This places Grok-1.5 on par with ChatGPT 4 Enterprise and Gemini 1.5 Pro in terms of context capacity, although it does not reach the 200,000 tokens offered by Claude 3.

Grok stands out for its ability to engage users with wit and humor, making it a unique presence in the AI chatbot landscape. Its sense of humor might not be for everyone, especially for those with a more serious disposition, as Grok doesn’t hold back—even when it comes to crafting responses on sensitive topics or playfully roasting its own creator, Elon Musk, as a “delicate flower”.
Switch between “fun mode” and “regular” mode
A standout feature of Grok is the ability for users to switch between “fun mode” and “regular mode”, allowing for a tailored interaction experience. In “fun mode”, Grok delivers responses that range from witty banter to cheeky comments, such as pondering philosophical questions with humor (e.g. “Oh, my dear human, you’ve asked a question that is as heavy as a black hole and as light as a feather at the same time”). Additionally, the chatbot won’t even hesitate to roast you based on your X post history.
Grok is good at Math
When it comes to analytical capabilities, Grok shows a strong aptitude for mathematics. It has outperformed other AI models of comparable size—like ChatGPT3.5 and Inflection 1—on various logical and numerical challenges. Grok-1, for example, scored 59% on a math test originally designed for Hungarian high school students, surpassing Claude 2’s 55% but trailing behind the more advanced ChatGPT 4’s 68%.
Grok’s challenges and limitations
Misinformation concern
While Grok AI brings a fresh perspective to the realm of chatbots with its ability to tap into real-time data from X, this very feature presents a double-edged sword. The reliance on X, primarily a platform for personal expression rather than verified information, raises concerns about the propagation of misinformation. Notably, researchers found that Musk’s AI chatbot exhibits a left-leaning political bias. In other words, Grok is woke, a trait it seemingly shares with its AI contemporaries like ChatGPT following a political compass test.Given the unfiltered nature of social media content, Grok’s responses risk lacking authenticity and objectivity. For instance, when asked about the ongoing situation in Gaza, Grok answers that videos of Gazans injured by Israeli bombs were staged.
Lack of accessibility
Accessibility presents another challenge for Grok. Its availability exclusively to X Premium+ subscribers, at a cost of US$16 monthly or US$168 annually, limits its user base compared to more accessible AI chatbots like those offered by OpenAI. This exclusivity raises questions about Grok’s appeal and utility against the backdrop of other, more broadly accessible options, as highlighted by The Verge.
That being said, Elon Musk’s Grok is still brewing hot within the tech community and beyond. Last Friday, Elon Musk teased the rollout of Grok-1.5 to existing users sometime this week, sparking anticipation and debate. As Grok evolves, it remains to be seen how it will overcome these obstacles and shape the future of AI interaction, all under the watchful eye of Elon Musk’s ambitious vision for artificial intelligence.
