Starting a business is no easy feat, and it can often be all-consuming. This can put a strain on even the strongest of relationships. But it doesn’t have to be this way!
Entrepreneurship is one of the most challenging, yet rewarding career paths you can take. It requires long hours, dedication and a lot of hard work—similar to maintaining a relationship with your partner. Understandably, you want to strive for success and take your business to higher levels as soon as possible. Yet, you only have as much energy, time and attention as everybody does.
Hence, if you haven’t found the sweet spot to keep both your business and your relationship running smoothly, it can take a huge toll on even the strongest relationships. Here are a few tips on how to make your business a success while keeping the romance between you and your partner alive:
1. Make time for your spouse
One of the most important things you can do to keep romance alive is to make time for your partner. This can be difficult when you’re running a business, especially when you’re just starting out, as you feel like you have to take care of every little thing happening in the company. No matter how hard it is, you should keep in mind that it’s important to set aside some time every week to focus on your relationship. Whether it’s going on a date night or just spending some quality time together, making time for your spouse or partner is essential to let her know how much you care about her and appreciate their understanding of your busy schedule.
If you can’t seem to find the time for date nights, get creative and plan something that you can do together during the day. For example, if you both love to cook, spend an afternoon cooking a meal together. Or, if you’re both into fitness, go for a hike or take a yoga class together. The golden rule is, don’t take your partner for granted and remember the importance of spending quality time with each other.
2. Communicate openly
Communication is key in any relationship, but it’s especially important when you’re just starting a business. As an entrepreneur, you are often so focused on your business that you forget to communicate with your partner. This can put a strain on your romantic relationship. To keep the spark alive, it is important to communicate openly with your partner about your work schedule, stresses and successes. Being eager to get feedback from your partner is also a way to tell them how important they are to you.
Also, do not bury your feelings and thoughts just because you assume the other person wouldn’t understand you and your business. Instead, you should check in with each other from time to time on your expectations and emotions towards each other. By doing so, you can maintain a healthy and happy romance while running your business.
3. Show appreciation for each other
It can be easy to forget to show appreciation to your partner. But when you show them how much they mean, it will go a long way in keeping romance alive and well! Whether through gifts, words or actions, anything is better than nothing. You don’t need expensive gifts to do wonders for your relationship. Try to take time out every once in a while for small gestures, like surprising them with weekend getaways, holding their hand when they are stressed out or simply expressing your love to them. Do not underestimate the impact of simple gestures.
4. Be understanding and supportive
When one half of a couple is an entrepreneur, it is important that the other half offers support. This can include listening to ideas and offering feedback, as well as being understanding when things get tough. The support of your partner in the entrepreneurial journey is invaluable. Entrepreneurship can be tough and stressful, but if you have a supportive other half who listens when things get hard, then the path will become much smoother for both of you!
Entrepreneurship doesn’t have to be all work and no play. It is also not inherently incompatible with romance. With a little extra effort, you can have a successful business and a happy, healthy relationship.
