However, this is just the beginning of the innovation iceberg. The next generation of mobility will bring flying taxis, autonomous vehicles and sustainable transportation solutions that will transform how we navigate our interconnected world. According to a 2022 Deloitte study, over 33 percent of Indian consumers are keen to adopt electrified and hybrid vehicles. Moreover, 59 percent of Indian consumers shared concerns about climate change and pollution from traditional vehicles, driving many to embrace electric vehicles for lower fuel costs. These insights underscore the shifting consumer demands and lay the groundwork for the future of next-gen mobility in India and beyond.

Initially proposed by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Hyperloop represents a mode of ground transportation where passengers travel at unprecedented speeds. The concept involves floating pods that race through massive low-pressure tubes or tunnels, either elevated above or tunneled below the ground.
Hyperloop eliminates friction and air resistance, key obstacles that slow down conventional vehicles. The pod levitates above its track using magnetic levitation (maglev), reducing friction. The maglev can reach high speeds while providing a smooth and enjoyable ride. Additionally, the passenger pods travel through a low-pressure sealed tube, where vacuums remove almost all the air. This creates an air pressure similar to 200,000 feet (61,000 meters) above sea level. The enclosed tube system also protects the hyperloop from weather conditions, allowing it to operate in nearly any weather.
Several companies are actively working to transform the Hyperloop concept into reality. These companies include both startups and established organizations that have been dedicated to this idea for some time. Among them are Virgin Hyperloop One, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, TransPod, Zeleros and others, each striving to develop unique sets of technologies while preserving the essence of the Hyperloop concept.
An air taxi, often called a flying or aero taxi, is a compact aircraft designed for transporting passengers within urban or local areas. It offers faster and more convenient commutes, easing the strain on heavily congested road networks while providing better access to remote locations.
Using the electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) concept, air taxis can operate from rooftop sky ports, offering streamlined implementation. This innovative approach also avoids the necessity of long runways. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently taken a proactive step by publishing a detailed document outlining the necessary measures to introduce a competitive air taxi market by 2028, with limited operations commencing as early as 2025.
The FAA’s plan demonstrates its belief in the feasibility of this technology. It highlights the organisation’s role as the governing body responsible for certifying the aircraft and establishing the rules and regulations that pilots and companies must adhere to. This lends credibility to the entire endeavor.
Apart from the FAA’s efforts, several companies are actively working on the global implementation of this concept. Companies like Uber, Airbus, Lilium and Joby Aviation have emerged as critical players in the development of flying taxis, showcasing their substantial investments and notable progress in this domain.
A robotaxi is a self-driving taxi or automated vehicle that operates through collaborative and on-demand mobility solutions. These robotaxis improve car fleet management and lower ownership costs. They’re popular due to their smart driving tech, making ownership cheaper. They can save 30 percent to 50 percent on car maintenance compared to other methods. On-demand means you can ask for a ride using an app or service whenever you need it.
Road safety has been a significant obstacle in driving the growth of the robotaxi industry. Even big companies like General Motors’ Cruise unit, which offers a self-driving ride-hailing service, faced challenges during their initial phase. In its first month of operating for paying customers, the autonomous taxi service faced several problems, such as stranded vehicles, an accident resulting in injuries and erratic vehicle behavior. However, despite these challenges, several major companies like Baidu, Hyundai, Waymo LLC and Didi Chuxing actively invest in this area, pushing the industry forward and overcoming the initial challenges.
Hoverbike resembles a motorcycle but doesn’t rely on wheels for propulsion. Instead, it hovers about a meter above the ground using a repulsor lift engine inspired by the Star Wars universe. This engine generates a field of negative gravity that allows the vehicle to float in mid-air.
In September 2022, a Japanese start-up called AERWINS Technologies introduced the XTURISMO, a flying hoverbike, at the Detroit Auto Show in the United States. This innovative hoverbike is being hailed as the world’s first of its kind, with the ability to fly in the air, showcasing an impressive and futuristic design. The hoverbike utilizes multiple propellers, resembling a quad-copter with extra propellers. It has two large propellers at the front and back and four smaller ones on each end. The larger propellers provide lift, while the smaller ones help stabilize the hoverbike.
The XTURISMO hoverbike comes with a hefty price tag of US$777,000, and as with many advanced technologies, the more features and details it offers, the higher the price. Despite being available for purchase in Japan, strict regulations for such vehicles limit its usage options. Due to these regulations, the XTURISMO can only fly or hover over racetracks.
