1. First City-Level DiDi Transportation Brain Went into Full Operation in Jinan

On December 26, 2018, Jinan Transportation Brain, a partnership between DiDi and the city’s transportation authorities, went into full operation. As DiDi’s first city-level transportation brain project, Jinan marks the “graduation” of the initiative from research and trial to full application.

R&D of Jinan Transportation Brain began in May 2018, featuring a cloud service that provides the computer infrastructure and four hubs: the perception center, the analysis center, the decision-making center, and the evaluation center.

Over the past year, the DiDi smart transportation team completed the construction of IT infrastructure, a big data platform and an application support platform. Public transportation data resources and DiDi analytics are now connected. More new business applications are in the pipeline, ranging from applications such as road conditions monitoring, vehicle supervision, smart traffic signal control and smart traffic police dispatch.

2. DiDi’s 2018 in Small Data: Users Traveled 48.8 Billion Km, 1.13 Million Items Were Lost and Found Including Crayfish

On January 3, 2019, Didi Chuxing announced a short report on its ride-hailing and taxi-hailing businesses in 2018. The report shows:DiDi users traveled 48.8 billion km in 2018, equivalent to five interstellar round trips from Earth to Neptune

  • DiDi users traveled 48.8 billion kilometers in 2018, equivalent to five interstellar round trips from Earth to Neptune.
  • Passengers clocked up 800 million kilometers on pooled trips. This environmentally friendly way of travel saved 43 million liters of fuel and 97,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
  • In 2018, total trips added up to 1.7 billion hours, comparable to the history from the Neolithic Age to the Internet era.
  • Passengers queued for more than 44 million hours before getting their ride, and still 2.5 billion requests were left unfulfilled.
  • In warm response to DiDi’s new safety features, 76 million users set up emergency contacts in the app and shared 530 million itineraries through the “share status” feature.
  • The 30 million recommended pick-up points in the DiDi app, which are designed to facilitate the pick-up process, helped save 5.4 billion calls between drivers and passengers.
  • DiDi and its drivers sent 1.13 million lost items to their absent-minded owners, including nursing bottles, crayfish, and other unconventional belongings.
  • DiDi Drivers received a total of 590 million Chinese characters in positive reviews, equivalent to 200 sets of Harry Potter: The Complete Collection (Chinese version).

DiDi Village Access Project put on-demand shuttles in Fengta Village, Yunnan Province

3. Poverty Relief @DiDi: Over 700,000 Drivers in 565 Poor Counties Work on DiDi

In a newly released Poverty Relief Report 2018, DiDi revealed that its ride-hailing services now cover 565 government-listed poor counties in China, generating income for 703,200 local drivers.

According to the report, ride-hailing is the sole source of income for over 40% of these drivers’ families. More than 6.7% of drivers on the platform fall within China’s poverty range. These drivers’ average time spent on the DiDi platform each day and gross monthly income are both higher than the platform average.

Meanwhile, DiDi actively explores technology solutions for poverty relief and regional development challenges. In January 2018, DiDi Village Access, an on-demand shuttle service for rural communities, was launched in cooperation with the Yunnan government, where DiDi provides carpooling technology and an operating platform to local public bus operations. In 2018, these on-demand shuttles safely served 6,571 passengers on 1,800 shifts. In addition, DiDi also set up emergency aid and children’s financial aid programs for drivers. As of June 2018, the former had provided assistance to 196 drivers’ families who fell into poverty due to illness.

4. DiDi Ranks First in Peer Safety ReviewSafety Center in the DiDi App

Recently, a reporter from Nanfang Metropolis Daily researched and evaluated safety items on six ride-hailing apps, including DiDi, Meituan, Ucar, Caocao, Shouqi and Yiche. The research found that DiDi’s comprehensive score is the highest. Safety innovations from DiDi, including “Police Assistance”, “Share Status” and “Safety Center” are becoming industry standards across China.

Compared with peers, DiDi not only sets a higher verification standard for drivers, but it was also the first to provide in-trip audio recording and other safety functions, which makes it possible to send the recording to the police when the user pushes “Police Assistance”. The review found that DiDi also has a more well-rounded in-app user communication plan, including the backseat reminder and other safety reminders. DiDi also provides advance payment support in case of medical emergency as part of its safety protection plan.

 5. BigData-Research Report: User Experience in Ride-Hailing is Better than in Taxi, DiDi’s Safety Features Have Received Recognition

In December 2018, BigData-Research released the 2018 Taxi & Ride-Hailing Services Report, which analyzed 11,420 valid samples. The report shows that 81.3% of users prefer ride-hailing services to taxis for its greater convenience, safety, diversity, comfort and other riding experience features.

Following are the major conclusions of the report:

  • Convenience, safety and diversity are the most important factors for riders’ experience. Compared with taxis, ride-hailing services received the highest level of users recognition for its convenience and diversity.
  • Between January and October 2018, the number of users’ complaints for ride-hailing is much lower than that of traditional taxis. Users’ satisfaction with complaint settlement and efficiency in ride-hailing is significantly higher than that in traditional taxis. The main reason is that ride-hailing platforms gather more comprehensive itinerary information, making the complaint process more efficient and prompt.
  • According to the data released by China’s Supreme Court, the crime incidence per 10,000 taxi drivers is 13 times higher than the number of ride-hailing drivers. Acts in collusion with passengers and dangerous driving behaviors are the major reasons inducing crimes.
  • The safety features upgraded by ride-hailing platforms, especially DiDi, have received wide appreciation, among which the user acceptance rate of one-tap police assistance, emergency contacts and real-time location-sharing has surpassed 80%.
  • More than 90% of the users think that safety is a common challenge faced by both ride-hailing and taxi industries. Technical methods help enhance safety and service, but to maintain a safe transportation environment needs efforts from all sectors of society.
  • Public acceptance of ride-hailing services is increasing. 90.6% of users think that ride-hailing is an upgrade of the traditional taxi service, which promotes the progress of the overall mobility industry.
