Charting the future of low-Earth orbit exploration, the mission ensures a seamless transition from the International Space Station to commercial space endeavors.
Starlab Space LLC, a joint venture between Voyager Space and Airbus, has selected SpaceX for the launch of the Starlab commercial space station into low-Earth orbit (LEO). Utilizing SpaceX’s fully reusable Starship system, which is capable of transporting both crew and cargo to various destinations including Earth orbit and Mars, Starlab is scheduled for launch in a single mission before the International Space Station is decommissioned.
“SpaceX’s history of success and reliability led our team to select Starship to orbit Starlab,” said Dylan Taylor, Chairman and CEO of Voyager Space. “SpaceX is the unmatched leader for high-cadence launches and we are proud Starlab will be launched to orbit in a single flight by Starship.”
Starlab is envisioned as a continually manned, free-floating space station aimed at serving an international consortium of space agencies, researchers and corporations. It promises to ensure an uninterrupted human presence in LEO, facilitating the transition of microgravity research from the International Space Station to a new era of commercial space stations. Designed for a single-launch deployment, Starlab will be fully equipped on Earth and ready to accommodate four crew members for long-term microgravity research and scientific exploration.
Tom Ochinero, Senior Vice President of Commercial Business at SpaceX, expressed enthusiasm for the project. “Starlab’s single-launch solution continues to demonstrate not only what is possible, but how the future of commercial space is happening now,” said Ochinero. “The SpaceX team is excited for Starship to launch Starlab to support humanity’s continued presence in low-Earth orbit on our way to making life multi-planetary.”
Over the previous year, the Starlab team has achieved several key milestones, including the completion of Systems Requirements Review, System Definition Review and Human in the Loop testing. Recently, Starlab Space disclosed a partnership with Northrop Grumman and intends to work alongside the European Space Agency. Hilton Hotels and The Ohio State University are also among Starlab’s collaborative partners.
