RedBox Storage partners with Second Chance to encourage waste reduction and promote circular economy in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, 20 April 2020 – RedBox Storage (Redbox) has partnered with Second Chance (2nd Chance), Hong Kong’s quality home furnishings and accessories reseller to help reduce the volume of household waste and promote circular economy in Hong Kong. The partnership is a pilot project for RedBox, which is planning a series of initiatives that will offer positive society-wide benefits and redefine growth.

Densely populated Hong Kong is short of land and facing a waste management crisis. More than 6 million tons of municipal solid waste was thrown away in 2018 and landfills are almost full. As Hong Kong seeks solutions, RedBox is leveraging its large scale facilities by offering 2nd Chance privileged rental for space to store previously used furniture, accessories and household items so that it can be reused and repurposed.

RedBox also aims to identify art, wine, clothing and other specialist companies requiring storage, to partner with and cross-promote each other’s businesses and in turn, provide better support to the communities around their storage sites.

Currently, 2nd Chance has two showrooms in Tuen Mun and Chai Wan. Through the partnership, RedBox enables 2nd Chance to expand their footprint and offer customers more convenient services. This partnership with 2nd Chance looks beyond traditional models of business growth and focuses on positive society-wide benefits.

“As a consumer-led economy, too much ends up in our landfills. This partnership with 2nd Chance offers RedBox customers the opportunity to monetise their unwanted furniture, rather than throwing it away,” said Simon Tyrrell, Chief Executive Officer of RedBox Storage. “Items that aren’t sold can be made available to Hong Kong charities such as Mother’s Choice and ImpactHK that have particular needs. Ideally, in a circular economy, we want to ensure we waste nothing and needs are met.”

In addition, the two companies will cross-sell their services to their customers. For example, if someone buys a piece of furniture from 2nd Chance, but is waiting to move somewhere new or complete a home renovation, 2nd Chance can offer the customer privilege rates for RedBox storage services. Meanwhile, RedBox will be able to introduce its customers to new ways to optimise storage space by selling unwanted items to 2nd Chance.

“We are excited to embark on this collaboration with RedBox, given our shared appreciation of the environment we all live in and love,” said Richard Bowsie, Director of 2nd Chance. “We also look forward to helping RedBox’s customers by giving them an avenue to recycle pre-loved furniture and accessories and therefore reducing the impact on Hong Kong’s landfills and the environment.”
