The center integrates space and ground data for comprehensive climate analysis.
At the 28th annual United Nations Climate Conference (COP28), NASA Administrator Bill Nelson and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael Regan, alongside other U.S. government leaders, introduced the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center. This initiative is a significant step in the Biden-Harris Administration’s efforts to make pivotal climate data more accessible to various stakeholders, including scientists, policy-makers, and the public. The center aims to utilize NASA’s valuable data in practical applications to safeguard the climate.
Functioning as a collaborative hub, the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center integrates efforts from various U.S. federal agencies, non-profit organizations and private sector collaborators. It consolidates data and computer models from sources like the International Space Station, satellites, airborne missions and ground stations. This data is readily accessible online.
NASA, leading the center’s implementation, has formed partnerships with the EPA, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Experts from these agencies have meticulously curated a catalog of greenhouse gas datasets and analysis tools.
Argyro Kavvada, the program manager at NASA Headquarters in Washington, emphasized the objective of expediting the collaborative utilization of Earth science data. “We’re working to get the right data into the hands of people who can use it to manage and track greenhouse gas emissions.” Kavvada further added.
The data catalog of the center encompasses an array of datasets offering insights into various aspects of greenhouse gases, including human-induced emissions, natural sources and sinks on land and in oceans and the identification and quantification of significant methane emission events. This includes data from NASA’s EMIT mission aboard the International Space Station, which employs an imaging spectrometer to monitor methane emissions on Earth.
The U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center’s datasets, algorithms and supporting code adhere to open-source principles, allowing unrestricted access for public testing and use. This openness extends to the center’s user support and an analysis hub, providing resources for advanced data analysis and an interactive interface for storytelling. NASA welcomes user feedback and suggestions for the center’s further development.
This initiative aligns with the broader administration’s goal to enhance greenhouse gas information, as outlined in the National Strategy to Advance an Integrated U.S. Greenhouse Gas Measurement, Monitoring and Information System.
