These features are part of the new Glassdoor app and desktop experience and offer a seamless transition between insights, jobs and workplace conversations. This strategic move is in line with Glassdoor’s mission to amplify transparency in workplaces around the globe, reinforcing their history of providing countless ratings, reviews, salaries and insights.
Anonymity in the workplace is vital in empowering employees to freely express their thoughts and concerns, promoting a healthy work environment. It also encourages open discussions and fosters a culture of transparency, allowing companies to understand better and address issues affecting their workforce. With Glassdoor’s latest anonymous community features, employees can now engage in genuine, anonymous conversations that yield valuable insights and connections within their workplace.
Introducing “bowls”: Glassdoor’s anonymous community initiative
The primary features of the new Glassdoor experience are communities referred to as “bowls”. These allow users to participate in discussions with other professionals on a broad array of topics. Industry Bowls™ span areas such as tech or consulting, while Interest Bowls™ include themes like “Working Moms”, “Black in Tech” and “Overheard at Work”. The platform also facilitates private Company Bowls™ for users to interact with their coworkers and company leaders. The platform offers a spectrum of anonymity, allowing users to post or comment with full disclosure, as an employee of their company or solely with their job title.
The moderation guidelines for these bowls will remain consistent, ensuring a safe and respectful discussion environment. These fresh community features are inspired by Fishbowl, a platform acquired by Glassdoor in 2021. Fishbowl allows users to express honest employee feedback anonymously and participate in interest-based conversation groups focused on work-related topics as well as search for job opportunities.
Empowering career growth with anonymity
A recent Glassdoor survey conducted by The Harris Poll revealed that a significant majority (68%) of U.S. employees desire a means to ask questions anonymously to their coworkers and company leaders. Moreover, 63% wished for an online community dedicated to providing career advice and navigating workplace challenges. Glassdoor’s new features respond to this need, empowering employees to form communities and gain insights from colleagues and professionals, furthering their career growth.
Christian Sutherland-Wong, Glassdoor’s CEO, acknowledges the rapid shifts in workplaces and the emerging needs of jobseekers, employees and employers. The aim is to promote transparent communication and connection with colleagues, allowing for anonymous or open discussions on a wide variety of work and life topics.
“This next evolution of Glassdoor will fundamentally change the way professionals ask questions and get answers, share knowledge and opinions and build community with one another. By expanding our core offering of reviews and ratings to include engaging real-time conversations, Glassdoor can unlock even deeper insights for companies that help them express their employer brand and make more informed decisions for their employee experience,” shared the CEO.
As part of this evolution, Glassdoor has unveiled a new logo and brand identity that symbolizes the connections made throughout careers. This vibrant identity comprises playful illustrations and animations and a direct, encouraging tone of voice, creating a streamlined user experience. Each Glassdoor interaction now involves real discussion on topics ranging from equal pay to workplace diversity to life beyond work.
