For Immediate Release
Hong Kong, 5 May 2020 – Cyberport and AWS Educate, an initiative under Amazon Web Services (AWS), will collaborate to launch the Cyberport and AWS Educate Cloud Career Pathways Programme. The Programme provides complimentary online learning for university and secondary school students to help them gain fundamental knowledge in cloud computing technology, and to ultimately encourage them to start a career in coveted technology sectors such as big data analysis, software development, machine learning, and cloud architecture as well as cultivate Hong Kong’s cloud technology talent of the future. The programme will be one of many initiatives to come under Cyberport Academy, a platform through which Cyberport will organise programmes to bolster the training and development of Hong Kong’s technology talent.
The Cyberport and AWS Educate Cloud Career Pathways Programme will have a University Track and a Secondary School Track for full time students above 14 years old, providing free online lessons of various levels and topics on fundamental concepts in cloud computing. Secondary school students will begin by earning the Cloud Explorer Badge through exploring concepts such as algorithms, programming and cybersecurity, they can then move on to the Cloud Inventor Badge, where they will delve deeper in cloud technology and learn about big data and how to build a website. Finally, they will be able to conquer the Cloud Building Badge by applying their knowledge in hands-on activities and challenges. Meanwhile, the University Track will focus more on professional skills and commercial applications. Students will be able to choose from 12 Pathways based on their interests and requirements, with the curriculum covering various essential skills in cloud computing. They will be able to learn about the history of cloud computing solutions, how to use predictive modelling to design cloud products, establishing business strategies through big data analysis, essential skills in developing and testing cloud application software, as well as the operations and support behind cloud solutions and more. Each Pathway includes detailed teaching content, assessments and a final report, and upon completion, students will be able to earn AWS Educate badges.
Nurturing more Technology Talent for Hong Kong
Eric Chan, Chief Public Mission Officer of Cyberport says, “Cloud technology is supporting the development of artificial intelligence and big data applications and is a key technology for driving digital transformation in many industries. We have noticed that there is a strong demand for talents in cloud computing for enterprises, small-and-medium businesses and start-ups. Cyberport is committed to providing technology enablement training and education for the youth and building up the local technology talent pool. We hope the programme will help deepen the understanding of cloud technology for students of local education institutions, cultivating the next generation of cloud technology talent in support of Hong Kong’s technological advancement.”
The first 10 University students and the first three Secondary Schools that have earned the most AWS Educate badges will receive certificates issued by AWS Educate, gifts and free AWS Educate promotion credits. Winners will be able to use the credits to access the AWS Platform, and continue to develop their knowledge of cloud technology. In addition, participating students can also create their own online resume on the AWS Educate platform and use the platform to search and apply for cloud technology-related job vacancies and internship opportunities provided by Amazon and many companies around the world.
Ahim Kho, Head of Business Development of AWS Hong Kong and Taiwan said, “AWS Educate provides a broad range of education resources on cloud technology for students all over the world. We are committed to bringing these resources and knowledge to educators and students in Hong Kong to continuously replenish the local cloud technology talent pool. By working with Cyberport, we hope to give more students opportunities to learn about cloud technology, help them apply this knowledge through hands-on training, and most importantly, equip them with the essential cloud technology skills-set for their careers.”
