SOLAR MINI, Upstage’s innovative language model on AWS, offers a scalable foundation for businesses aiming to penetrate the Korean generative AI market.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has partnered with South Korean AI startup Upstage to launch SOLAR MINI, a Small Language Model (SLM) designed to facilitate a broad spectrum of language tasks in Korean and English, with Thai and Japanese support anticipated soon. This initiative aims to simplify the integration of generative AI for Upstage’s customers, enabling the creation of industry-specific applications without the need for extensive model training from scratch.
SOLAR MINI is now accessible via Amazon SageMaker JumpStart and the AWS Marketplace, offering a seamless path for Upstage users to customize the model with domain-specific data. Notable companies such as Metaverse Entertainment, Quora, ConnectWave and Qanda have already leveraged SOLAR MINI’s capabilities to enhance their operations.
“Upstage’s SOLAR MINI on AWS is a powerful solution that helps enterprises of all sizes to easily embrace generative AI at the local level,” said Jeongwon Yoon, AWS Korea’s Country Director. He expressed confidence in Upstage’s innovative solution, highlighting AWS’s commitment to supporting local enterprises in adopting cutting-edge AI technologies securely and at scale.
Meanwhile, Upstage CEO Sung Kim highlighted AWS’s crucial support in Upstage’s growth and global AI ambitions, praising AWS’s computing power and cost-effectiveness in training SOLAR MINI. “Today, we are thrilled to deepen our relationship with AWS to launch our SOLAR MINI model on Amazon SageMaker JumpStart, which opens up new possibilities for companies around the world to use the Korea’s most versatile LLM. Upstage is committed to redefining the AI landscape and delivering the most reliable and innovative AI solutions for corporate applications,” he remarked.
Advancing language understanding with cultural nuance
Upstage utilized advanced data pre-processing and fine-tuning techniques to enhance SOLAR MINI’s performance, incorporating a vast dataset provided by the 1 Trillion Token Club. This comprehensive training approach has refined the model’s cultural understanding and accuracy, reducing the occurrence of “AI hallucinations”.
Recognition from the global AI platform HuggingFace underscores SOLAR MINI’s efficiency and innovative design, proving its capability to perform at par with larger models while offering significant cost savings on GPUs.
Fueling industry-specific AI innovations
ConnectWave and Qanda, companies in the ecommerce and edtech sectors, respectively, have successfully integrated SOLAR MINI to develop tailored solutions that address their unique challenges. ConnectWave has created a private LLM for ecommerce modernization, while Qanda is enhancing mathematical learning tools for students through Upstage’s AI model.
AWS’s investment in South Korea’s cloud infrastructure
In October 2023, AWS announced a significant investment in South Korea’s cloud infrastructure, planning to spend KRW7.85 trillion (US$5.88 billion) by 2027. This investment is expected to contribute substantially to South Korea’s GDP and support thousands of jobs annually, reflecting AWS’s commitment to supporting the country’s digital transformation and cloud service needs.
