Medtronic and Cosmo Join Forces to Advance AI-Integrated Solutions
Medtronic plc, a prominent healthcare tech company, has expanded its partnership with Cosmo Intelligent Medical Devices, a subsidiary of Cosmo Pharmaceuticals. This development strengthens their existing collaboration, which has already seen success with the GI Genius™ intelligent endoscopy module.
The partnership is focused on utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to drive innovation and scalability in healthcare, enhancing outcomes for patients and caregivers globally. This global alliance aligns with Medtronic’s strategy of integrating AI into healthcare solutions, especially in endoscopic care.
Innovating healthcare with AI platforms
The collaboration highlights the use of advanced AI platforms like AI Access™, designed to host multiple third-party AI applications. This initiative aims to speed up innovation and streamline the development of medical AI applications, broadening the scope of diagnostic and treatment options in healthcare.
Ken Washington, Chief Technology Officer at Medtronic, emphasizes the transformative impact of their alliance with Cosmo Pharmaceuticals. The GI Genius module, Medtronic’s first FDA-cleared AI product in gastrointestinal care, is a significant achievement of this collaboration. The AI Access platform, according to Washington, epitomizes their vision for healthcare transformation, combining Medtronic’s medical expertise with Cosmo’s technological innovation.
Focus on GI Genius module
The focal point of this partnership is the GI Genius module, an AI-driven system designed for polyp detection during colonoscopies. Since its introduction in the U.S. in 2021, the module has notably enhanced gastrointestinal screening, aiding gastroenterologists and boosting adenoma detection rates by 14%. The increasing adoption of this technology underscores AI’s role in improving medical procedures. The synergy of Cosmo’s AI technology with Medtronic’s market development expertise has set new benchmarks in healthcare efficiency, accuracy and patient outcomes.
Strategic milestone and future vision

Financial and commercial terms
Following the expanded agreement, Medtronic will provide Cosmo an initial payment of US$100 million, plus royalties on net sales and potential milestone payments totaling US$100 million by the end of 2024. Cosmo Pharmaceuticals will remain the exclusive manufacturer, while Medtronic gains global commercial rights.
