New survey findings reveal how AI advancements and healthcare inflation are impacting Americans’ retirement plans and financial security.
The Nationwide Retirement InstituteĀ®’s latest Health Care Cost in Retirement survey paints a concerning picture of Americans’ growing anxiety over their ability to afford healthcare costs in retirement. This unease is heightened by the ongoing rise in healthcare costs and persistent inflation in the United States.
Conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of Nationwide, the survey sampled 1,260 U.S. adults across different generational groups between August 28 and September 11, 2023, ensuring a representative demographic spread.
Rising concerns over healthcare affordability
The survey found that a significant portion of respondents (59%) are not confident about their ability to manage healthcare expenses as they age. Additionally, 57% are troubled by the prospect of affording caregiving for a spouse or partner, highlighting the financial stress associated with aging and health.
Impact of AI on lifespan and financial planning
An interesting revelation from the study is the expectation among a quarter of Americans (26%) that advancements in AI within healthcare could extend their lifespans by over a decade. This anticipation varies across generations, with Gen Z expecting an additional 15 years, millennials 12 years, Gen Xers eight years and boomers nine years. This suggests that Americans might need to plan for prolonged healthcare costs.
āAdvances in AI and health care technology in general are moving faster than ever and may help treat many of today’s chronic diseases, as well as other health issues,ā said Kristi Rodriguez, Senior Vice President of the Nationwide Retirement Institute. āWhile this is good news, longevity requires more planning. That is why it is so important to consult with a financial professional to create a plan that prioritizes your health care needs now and for a retirement that could be longer than anticipated.ā
Economic strain and healthcare tradeoffs
Current economic uncertainties are leading many Americans to make difficult choices regarding their healthcare. The survey indicates that 18% of adults have postponed medical procedures or exams or have not renewed prescriptions to save money. Additionally, 10% are considering downgrading their health insurance due to high inflation, with this percentage being higher among younger generations.
Alarmingly, 60% opt for lower premium but higher deductible health plans, and over half of Americans (51%) confess they couldn’t afford an unexpected US$5,000 healthcare expense.
Retirement planning and health care costs
The survey also reveals that 66% of U.S. adults fear the detrimental impact of healthcare costs on their retirement plans. Remarkably, 69% of Americans with chronic conditions lack a financial plan incorporating their healthcare expenses in retirement, and 68% do not engage with a financial professional.
The role of financial professionals in healthcare planning
There’s a glaring knowledge gap about Medicare among respondents, with over 70% unable to correctly answer basic questions about the program, like coverage, the workings of Medicare Part B and financial considerations related to various Medicare plans. This indicates a pressing demand for professional financial guidance.
Underestimation of healthcare costs in retirement
A significant gap in awareness is evident as Americans underestimate the average healthcare cost in retirement, putting it at US$55,343, whereas the actual cost in 2022 was almost triple at US$172,500 for an individual or US$315,000 for a typical retired couple.
In summary, Rodriguez points out the necessity for Americans to gain more knowledge and seek professional guidance to make informed financial decisions. This approach is vital in managing healthcare expenses in retirement planning without compromising overall financial security, especially in light of soaring inflation and healthcare costs.
