The 8GB version of the Fairphone 4 received a remarkable repairability score of 9.3 out of 10, surpassing the repairability rating of the iPhone 12, which scored 6 out of 10. This rating is based on a recent French law that mandates repairability labeling for electronic devices. It indicates how easily certain electronic devices can be repaired. 

Fairphone stands out by offering a modular design that enables users to perform repairs themselves, easily fostering a sense of empowerment. The main objective of implementing modularity in Fairphone’s architecture is to make the assembly and replacement of subsystems or units easier and more efficient.

The company also provides spare parts with a five-year warranty, ensuring long-term support in case of malfunctions. The phone’s software will also receive updates for five years, ensuring it remains functional and up-to-date.

The company prioritizes sustainability, incorporating up to 40 percent recycled plastics in its smartphones. It also demonstrates its commitment to circularity by pledging to recycle or refurbish one device for every Fairphone 4 sold. This approach promotes a more sustainable smartphone lifecycle, reducing electronic waste and conserving valuable resources. To add the final touch, Fairphone ships its phones in plastic-free packaging that doubles as a return box for its recycling program. 

Nokia X30 5G: a secure, eco-friendly marvel

In September 2022, HMD Global, the Finnish company behind Nokia phones, introduced a lineup of new smartphones that emphasized environmental sustainability. The standout device in the product lineup is the Nokia X30 5G, which is the company’s most environmentally friendly device to date. It achieves this distinction by featuring a frame constructed entirely from 100 percent recycled aluminium and a back cover made from 65 percent recycled plastic.

The company is also offering a compelling promise of providing three years of security updates for the Nokia X30 5G, ensuring that users can enjoy a safer and more secure experience over an extended period of time. 

Not stopping there, Nokia takes its eco-friendly approach to the next level by utilizing environmentally conscious materials for the smartphone’s retail packaging. The packaging is crafted using 100 percent Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified paper, which ensures responsible sourcing of the paper from well-managed forests.

Additionally, 94 percent of the packaging is made from recycled paper, contributing to a significant reduction in the consumption of new resources and minimizing the ecological footprint associated with the product.

Nothing Phone (2): redefining sustainability 

Nothing Inc, an electronics startup based in London, has recently announced that its newest product, Phone (2), is designed with a greater emphasis on environmental sustainability.

The upcoming Phone (2), scheduled for global release in July, has been reported to have received Société Générale de Surveillance (SGS) certification for its carbon footprint. SGS is a well-known global company specializing in inspection, verification, testing and certification. In the context of carbon footprint certification, SGS conducts a comprehensive assessment to measure and validate the carbon emissions associated with a product or company’s activities throughout its entire lifecycle. The carbon footprint of the Phone (2) has been determined to be 53.45kg (CO2e), which is approximately 8.6 percent lower compared to its predecessor.

The phone incorporates a mid-frame (a structural component comprising the phone’s battery, circuit boards and the like) made entirely from 100 recycled aluminium. By utilizing recycled aluminium, the company actively reduces the need for mining new materials, resulting in a substantial decrease in carbon emissions associated with mining and production processes. 

In addition, the Nothing Phone 2 also utilizes a main circuit board made entirely from 100 percent recycled copper foil. This choice serves a dual purpose: it significantly reduces the need for new copper mining, thereby minimizing the environmental impact associated with extraction, while also directly tackling the pressing problem of electronic waste.

The packaging material of the Phone (2) is designed to be plastic-free and consists of more than 60 percent recycled fiber. This eco-friendly packaging reduces the reliance on new plastic materials, further minimizing the product’s environmental footprint.
