Singapore, 12th March 2019 – Local start-up, That Tuition Café (TTC), announced the launch of its new modular tutoring concept, integrated with their very own café-inspired learning space early this month. Verified tutors will be able to list their available subjects on the start-up’s very own app and students can select the tutor who best suits their needs.
Likened to the offerings of current co-working spaces in the market to provide modular workspaces, TTC identified a gap in the tutoring industry to provide a place for conducive learning and teaching, a struggle many tutors and students face.
TTC adopts a simplified process for students to find a tutor and learning space using an app-based selection process. Via the TTC’s mobile app, the student or the parent can choose tutors based on experience, subject, rating and a convenient time slot.
With a pool of tutors specialising in Upper Secondary and Junior College tuition, TTC gives students the advantage of having access to a variety of tutors in one location, studying in a relaxed café-like, environment, ease of booking and payment.
Students can also rate and leave feedback on the tutor after each session to help other students in their selection of tutors for future sessions. This will also help tutors identify pointers in their teaching which benefited students and enable TTC to maintain a qualified pool of tutors.
“We came up with the idea of TTC after observing students all over the island studying in cafes. We felt that if we could provide a similar environment backed with a tutor to help them study, it would make learning so much easier and, at the same time, fun. So, for us TTC is more than just a physical space, it’s an ecosystem that focuses on students taking control of their learning and being able to do it in a cool and conducive environment, which is also safe. “said Aparna Shivpuri, Co-Founder of TTC.

“Above all, I want to give parents peace of mind when they send their children out to study. Our location managers not only oversee the sessions ongoing at the space, their authorization is also necessary to release payment via the app to ensure that the session has actually taken place, Aparna further added.
Addressing The Needs of All Tutors
Traditional tuition settings comprise of 1-to-1 private sessions at homes of students or tuition centers. However, there has been a growing trend of students choosing to head to public spaces to study with their friends or organize tutoring sessions. This has raised concerns1 from parents, who believe that such public spaces are not the most ideal places for effective studying.
TTC taps on this growing trend of studying at café, as well as the current learning needs of the student, integrating them into their current space.
Conveniently located near Sixth Avenue MRT, TTC’s cafe-inspired venue adopts an open concept setting with comfortable seating, compared to the traditional tuition environment of big classroom-style spaces cramped with small desks. The founders of TTC believe environment to play a big role in learning. Having an ideal space will help to ease the pressure of rote learning and instead, allow students to focus on understanding concepts and subjects.
Amy Tan, a tutor a part of That Tuition Café’s concept, says, “Finding a suitable place to have tutoring sessions has always been a struggle. Students may not be comfortable having tutoring sessions at their homes and public spaces are not the best for teaching. Even with a suitable place, the location may be too far and require long commute hours, resulting time wasted on travelling. The co-working concept of That Tuition Cafe not only provides a fixed conducive location for productive tutoring sessions, but also the flexibility of not being tied to one tuition centre and access for tutors in having a steady pool of students.”
The ultimate goal of TTC is to allow learners to fully take charge of their own learnings while providing an optimal tutoring environment. That Tuition Cafe hopes to expand their cafes to allow more students and tutors to get access to this learning space, as well as to accommodate group tutoring sessions.
