Michael Page Report on Hong Kong Workforce Trends 2023: 90% of Satisfied Employees Remain Open to New Roles

Michael Page Report on Hong Kong Workforce Trends 2023

The workforce is changing. Employers need to adapt, or they’ll be left behind.

A recent study titled “Talent Trends 2023: The Invisible Revolution” by Michael Page Hong Kong has shed light on the evolving dynamics of the Hong Kong workforce. While nearly half of the participants (49%) reported job satisfaction, an overwhelming 90% are still considering new job prospects. Interestingly, 80% of those who recently switched jobs are also exploring new opportunities.

The survey, which encompassed 1,042 Hong Kong workers, found that 40% have transitioned to new roles since the onset of the pandemic. This shift suggests a changing paradigm in job commitment, which is now being called the “Invisible Revolution”, leaning towards a more transactional work approach.

Mark Tibbatts, Managing Director of Michael Page Hong Kong & Taiwan, emphasized the growing need for genuine human interaction in the workplace. He noted that while technological advancements have facilitated flexible work setups, face-to-face interactions are becoming increasingly valued, catering to a basic human need for social connection.

Salary remains a pivotal factor in this evolving landscape. The report indicates that 30% of employees feel the pinch of the rising cost of living, with 19% not seeing a pay hike in the past two years. This suggests a trend where employees are more inclined to monetize their skills, seeking better pay elsewhere if needed.

Amid challenging economic scenarios, 56% are proactively looking for better job opportunities. With the backdrop of the “Great Resignation”, the study advises employers to adopt a continuous recruitment approach to address higher turnover rates.

Furthermore, the report emphasizes the significance of a well-defined Employee Value Proposition (EVP) that extends beyond mere salary and flexibility. It suggests that incorporating employee priorities into the EVP can serve as a significant competitive advantage when it comes to attracting new talent and retaining existing employees.

The report concludes with a recommendation for employers to better understand and cater to the evolving needs of employees. This includes offering clear pathways for training, career progression and associated compensation benefits.

Nicholas Kirk, CEO at PageGroup, commented on the global resonance of these findings, stating that these shifts are not just temporary reactions but are fundamentally transforming the global workplace landscape.
