Kellanova Sets to Reach 90% Renewable Energy in North America by 2024

By 2030, Kellanova aims to power all owned manufacturing facilities with 100% renewable electricity.

Kellanova, previously known as Kellogg Company and a leading global snacks company, is making strides toward a sustainable future. The company, renowned for products like Cheez-ItĀ® and Rice Krispies TreatsĀ®, is on course to fulfill its ambitious target of utilizing 100% renewable electricity across all its owned manufacturing facilities worldwide by the end of 2030, aligning with its Better Daysā„¢ Promise.

In a significant milestone, Kellanova’s North American manufacturing operations are set to reach 90% renewable electricity by the end of 2024. This progress comes via a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) signed in 2021 for about 360 gigawatt-hours of wind electricity annually, sourced from a wind farm in north central Texas. This initiative not only boosts clean energy in the local community but covers 90% of the electricity used by Kellanova’s North American facilities.

Janelle Meyers, Kellanova’s Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized the importance of this advancement towards the company’s goal of 100% renewable electricity by 2030. ā€œAs a global food company, we have a significant role to play in helping to reduce reliance on limited energy sources across our value chain and creating a positive impact for people and the planet,ā€ she asserts.

Global efforts for renewable electricity

  • Europe: Kellanova’s manufacturing sites have achieved 100% renewable electricity through renewable energy certificates (RECs), a practice in place since 2016. Additionally, Kellanova is exploring the use of green hydrogen in the UK as a cleaner alternative to natural gas.
  • Asia, Middle East and Africa: The company increased its renewable electricity share from 1% in 2018 to 33% in 2023, employing solutions like solar panels in its facilities in India, South Africa, Thailand and Malaysia.
  • Latin America: The Kellanova facility in Colombia is now powered entirely by renewable hydroelectric energy.

Kellanova adheres to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for measuring greenhouse gas emissions and renewable electricity usage. The company plans to report its 2024 progress towards the Better Daysā„¢ Promise in a social and environmental report due in 2025.
