The collaboration pledges to revolutionize farming practices on a massive scale, benefiting the environment and farmers alike.
In a significant step toward sustainable agriculture, General Mills, Walmart and Sam’s Club have joined forces to promote regenerative farming practices across 600,000 acres in the United States by 2030. This land area matches the span from which General Mills procures essential ingredients for its products at Walmart and Sam’s Club. The initial phases of this initiative are backed by grants from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF). The mission is to elevate regenerative farming practices across diverse crops, spotlighting wheat, notably in regions like the Northern and Southern Great Plains.
Jon Nudi, Group President of North America Retail at General Mills, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting its potential to enhance the sustainability of products like Pillsbury refrigerated dough and Blue Buffalo pet food. This partnership underscores a mutual recognition between the companies of the role regenerative agriculture plays in addressing climate change and promoting environmental and societal benefits.
The collaboration will target seven states in the U.S. Great Plains—North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and Minnesota. This selection includes Minnesota, where General Mills is headquartered. A central component of the program is the allocation of financial assistance by NFWF to local organizations. These funds will be used to bolster educational and coaching resources, facilitating a shift towards regenerative agriculture. The overarching aim is to enhance soil health, water management, biodiversity, climate resilience and economic stability for farmers.
John Laney, Executive Vice President of Food at Walmart U.S., emphasized the commitment to making sustainable choices more accessible to consumers. He views this collaborative endeavor as a strategic move to encourage regenerative agricultural practices and ensure long-term supply sustainability for key food products.
This partnership aligns with the individual sustainability objectives of both General Mills and Walmart. It not only contributes to General Mills’ ambition to advance regenerative agriculture on one million acres by 2030 but also supports Walmart’s goal, in partnership with the Walmart Foundation, to sustainably manage or restore at least 50 million acres of land by the same year. The initiative paves the way for future collaborations across various sectors, ensuring the continuous provision of high-quality products while adhering to sustainable and environmentally conscious practices.
