Eightfold AI Joins Department of Commerce Initiative for AI Safety

The consortium unites diverse AI experts and sectors to promote the development of safe and reliable AI.

Eightfold AI, an AI-driven talent solution company, has announced its involvement in a Department of Commerce initiative aimed at fostering the development and deployment of trustworthy and secure artificial intelligence (AI). This initiative, under the auspices of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), introduces the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC). The consortium aims to unite a diverse group of stakeholders, encompassing AI developers, users, academia, government and industry experts and civil society bodies to advance the mission of safe and reliable AI.

Roy Wang, Chief Legal Officer at Eightfold AI, expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing the importance of responsible AI use and the establishment of regulations and testing. “We view our participation in the AISIC as a key factor in AI’s growing use and value to individuals, organizations and society at large,” he remarked.

“The U.S. government has a significant role to play in setting the standards and developing the tools we need to mitigate the risks and harness the immense potential of artificial intelligence,” commented Gina Raimondo, Secretary of Commerce. Following directives from President Biden, the initiative aims to safeguard the innovation ecosystem and position the United States as a leader in the responsible development of AI. “Through President Biden’s landmark Executive Order, we will ensure America is at the front of the pack—and by working with this group of leaders from industry, civil society and academia, together we can confront these challenges to develop the measurements and standards we need to maintain America’s competitive edge and develop AI responsibly,” she added.

The AISIC includes over 200 entities, including major companies, innovative startups, creators of advanced AI systems and hardware, key civil society and academic groups and professional representatives deeply involved in AI’s current applications. The consortium’s membership extends to state and local governments and non-profits, and it plans to collaborate with organizations from nations with aligned interests in establishing effective and interoperable AI safety standards globally. This collaborative effort represents a comprehensive approach to understanding AI’s transformative impact on society and ensuring its safe and ethical use.
