AI21 Labs, an Israeli-based generative AI (GenAI) startup, declared the successful closure of its Series C funding, securing US$208 million at a valuation of US$1.4 billion. The funding round saw the addition of new investors, such as Intel Capital and Comcast Ventures, alongside previously announced backers. With this round, AI21’s cumulative funding reached US$336 million. This financial boost is set to accelerate the company’s mission of shaping AI-first enterprises.
Anthony Lin, Corporate Vice President and Head of Intel Capital, highlighted the necessity for a multi-disciplinary approach in delivering AI to end users. He expressed that the AI21 full-stack offering merges foundational models with effective applications and operational tools that will assist enterprises in adopting GenAI. This adoption is expected to enhance productivity and impact their bottom and top lines. AI21 Labs navigates the dynamic and competitive sphere of GenAI, finding itself in direct competition with prominent entities like OpenAI, Cohere and Anthropic.
Comcast Ventures’ Allison Goldberg expressed admiration for AI21’s team and their rapid scaling capabilities in the evolving generative AI landscape. The partnership anticipates AI21’s impactful delivery of enterprise solutions utilizing generative AI in strategic and reliable ways.
Ori Goshen, co-CEO and co-founder of AI21, expressed gratitude towards investors for their belief in the company’s deep technology expertise. This new funding will empower AI21 to emphasize the importance of tailored AI solutions, as enterprises require unique partners to address their specific needs.

AI21’s strategy deviates from general-purpose models, which often include unnecessary capabilities for enterprises, leading to additional costs and reliability issues. Instead, AI21 Studio offers task-specific models optimized for distinct natural language processing (NLP) tasks. These models ensure accuracy and reduce hallucinations, providing reliable solutions tailored to enterprise requirements.
AI21 Studio’s platform offers API access to developers and businesses, with state-of-the-art language models powering robust NLP solutions. Its specialized task-specific models address key NLP capabilities, such as contextual answers and summarization, aligning with diverse enterprise needs. The contextual answers model, for instance, has been effectively utilized by companies like Clarivate and One Zero digital bank for grounded question-answering based on organizational data.
From large language models to advanced AI systems
Unique in its field, AI21 combines proprietary LLM development with consumer application development. The company employs a neuro-symbolic architecture, integrating large language models (LLMs), external knowledge sources and discrete reasoning. Co-founder and co-CEO Prof. Yoav Shoham foresees a shift towards AI Systems, heralding a new era in computing.
