Shanghai Electric Boosts UK’s Energy Capacity with Pioneering Projects

With the completion of key energy storage and solar projects, Shanghai Electric bolsters the UK’s power infrastructure for future demands.

Shanghai Electric recently announced the commercial operation of its first large-scale overseas energy storage project, the 100MW/100MWh REP1&2 energy storage station in the UK. Following this, Shanghai Electric also achieved the grid connection of the Fiskerton II-A solar project in Lincolnshire, the final one in a series of eight solar projects across the UK.

Located in East and Southeast England, areas with some of the highest power demands during the coldest season according to Statista Research Department, these projects are set to significantly bolster the grid’s capacity during peak times.

Innovative technology enhancing UK power systems

The REP1&2 project in Kent, which utilizes high-performance lithium iron phosphate batteries from Gotion New Energy’s Nantong factory, was initially developed by Pacific Green and later acquired by a subsidiary of Generali, Italy’s largest insurance company. Shell Energy Europe Limited now officially operates the project, aiming to enhance the UK power system’s efficiency, reliability and sustainability.

Shanghai Electric’s contribution to the REP1&2 project involved providing a complete energy storage system solution, including 38 battery containers and 20 PCS containers. This marks a notable advancement for Shanghai Electric in the global energy storage market.

The Fiskerton II-A project’s successful grid connection completes Shanghai Electric’s ambitious endeavor of eight solar projects in the UK, reinforcing its reputation as a solar innovator committed to sustainable and innovative renewable energy solutions. These projects collectively are expected to generate 128,117 MWh of green electricity annually in the UK.

Mr. Stuart Mellor, the project manager of the Fiskerton II-A project, highlighted Shanghai Electric’s comprehensive role in these projects, from investment and financing to construction, grid connection and operation. This reflects the company’s extensive capabilities in delivering advanced solar solutions.

Timeline of Shanghai Electric’s solar projects in the UK

The timeline of the eight solar projects includes West Holcombe in Shillingford (grid-connected in January 2022), Bishop’s Waltham in Winchester (June 2022), Outwood in Billericay and Ingham in Bury St. Edmunds (July 2022), Trowse Newton in Norwich (August 2022), Sweeting Thorns in Scunthorpe (January 2023), Low Farm in Grimsby (April 2023) and Fiskerton II-A in Lincolnshire (December 2023). These developments collectively represent a significant step in meeting the growing global demand for renewable energy sources.
