Microsoft and Siemens are expanding their partnership by integrating generative AI into various industries globally. Their first collaborative endeavor is the introduction of Siemens Industrial Copilot, an AI-driven assistant designed to enhance human-machine collaboration in manufacturing. Furthermore, the integration of Siemens Teamcenter software for product lifecycle management with Microsoft Teams will facilitate the creation of an industrial metaverse, streamlining virtual collaboration among design engineers, frontline workers and cross-functional teams.

Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft, emphasized the opportunity this next-generation AI presents in accelerating industrial innovation. The synergy of Microsoft’s cloud-based AI advancements and Siemens’ industrial expertise aims to empower workers with AI-enhanced tools, beginning with the Siemens Industrial Copilot.

Roland Busch, CEO of Siemens AG, echoed this vision, emphasizing their shared goal of enabling generative AI adoption and revolutionizing the design, development, manufacturing and operational processes of companies. He highlighted the importance of making human-machine collaboration more accessible, particularly for engineers looking to expedite code development and address labor shortages.

Introducing Siemens industrial copilot: Enhancing efficiency in automation

The Siemens Industrial Copilot is designed to significantly expedite the generation, optimization and debugging of complex automation code, reducing tasks that took weeks to mere minutes. It combines information from Siemens’ Siemens Xcelerator digital platform with Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI Service. The tool maintains user control over data, ensuring it isn’t used to train the AI models.

This tool aims to enhance productivity and efficiency across the industrial lifecycle. Maintenance staff can use natural language to receive detailed repair instructions, and engineers can swiftly access simulation tools.

Expanding AI copilots across various industries

The partnership envisages AI copilots benefiting professionals in industries like manufacturing, infrastructure, transportation and healthcare. Plans include introducing numerous copilots in sectors such as automotive, consumer package goods and machine building. 

Schaeffler AG, a leading automotive supplier, is already implementing generative AI in its engineering phase, enhancing the reliability of industrial automation system coding. The company plans to incorporate Siemens Industrial Copilot in its operations to reduce downtime and eventually extend its benefits to clients.

Klaus Rosenfeld, CEO of Schaeffler Group, expressed excitement about this joint pilot, which he believes will enhance efficiency, reduce repetitive tasks and foster creativity among their team.

Teamcenter for Microsoft Teams: Bridging virtual collaboration

Starting December 2023, Teamcenter for Microsoft Teams will be generally available, connecting product design and manufacturing lifecycle functions. It merges Siemens’ Teamcenter product lifecycle management (PLM) software with Microsoft’s Teams platform, facilitating data access for factory and field service workers. This integration aims to include millions of workers currently outside the PLM tool sphere in the design and manufacturing processes, enhancing collaboration and contribution.

This partnership between Microsoft and Siemens represents a significant step in the use of generative AI to transform industrial operations, offering a new dimension of productivity and collaboration in various sectors.
