The tech giant aims to create a potential path for digital sovereignty in Europe with the launch of its European Sovereign Cloud.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. This initiative, designed specifically for Europe, aims to address the stringent regulatory requirements of public sector entities and industries that are heavily regulated. The cloud will be physically and logically separate from AWS’s current regions, yet maintain the same security and performance standards. Its first region will be established in Germany and will be accessible to all European customers.
Enhancing data residency and operational autonomy
The AWS European Sovereign Cloud will provide an advanced set of sovereignty controls, enabling customers to meet data residency, operational autonomy and resiliency needs more effectively. Unique to this cloud is that only EU-resident AWS employees within the EU will have operational control, ensuring enhanced data residency. The cloud will also have its own billing and usage systems, and it will allow customers to retain all metadata within the EU.
Max Peterson, vice president of Sovereign Cloud at AWS, emphasizes the company’s dedication to offering top-tier sovereignty controls and security features. AWS’s long-term collaboration with European governments and regulatory bodies has been a key driver in developing this solution.“With this new offering, customers and Partners across Europe will have more choice to achieve the operational independence they require, without compromising on the broadest and deepest cloud services that millions of customers already know and use today,” Peterson said.
Claudia Plattner of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) supports this development, recognizing AWS’s contribution to enhancing data security and protection standards in Europe. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is poised to ease the operational challenges faced by public sector entities and companies with high data security needs.
Innovative solutions for isolation and data residency
AWS plans to employ AWS Outposts and AWS Dedicated Local Zones for customers seeking additional isolation and in-country data residency options. These solutions will offer a consistent hybrid experience and can be tailored to meet specific regulatory requirements.
With respect to performance, users can anticipate the same low latency and high availability that’s characteristic of existing AWS regions. The new cloud will feature multiple Availability Zones, ensuring business continuity while facilitating high-availability applications.
Extensive cloud infrastructure and development in Europe
With a sprawling infrastructure spanning 102 Availability Zones across 32 regions worldwide, AWS has further plans in the pipeline to introduce an additional 15 Availability Zones in countries including Canada, Germany and New Zealand and several others. Europe is already home to eight AWS Regions and significant AWS development teams, showcasing the company’s commitment to the European market.
Welcoming the AWS European Sovereign Cloud
The introduction of the AWS European Sovereign Cloud has been met with widespread acclaim. From pivotal government bodies to mammoth enterprises like SAP, Dedalus and T-Systems, there’s a unanimous sentiment of support and optimism for this transformative step in digital sovereignty. Additionally, there’s an expected surge in economic growth, job opportunities and skill development initiatives across the continent with this new venture.
Sustainability commitment
AWS has also set a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. This vision is further bolstered by its commitment to operate on 100% renewable energy by 2025. Complementing this, AWS also envisions becoming water-positive by 2030, emphasizing its dedication to environmentally-conscious operations.
This announcement marks a significant stride in AWS’s journey, offering a robust and secure cloud infrastructure while upholding the highest standards of data protection and regulatory compliance in Europe.
